COVID-19 Modifications

Last Updated: 08/01/2021

BFS has made necessary adjustments to our program and operations in light of the Coronavirus pandemic in accordance with the recommendations laid out by the CDC and NYC Department of Health. We are a small, collaborative co-op community and, as such, it is our shared responsibility to keep each other safe. Some of the practices we’ve adopted with that in mind.

The drop-off and pick-up process has been reimagined with safety and social distancing in mind. Classroom arrival and departure times are staggered and families are sufficiently spaced through the check-in process. Though parents and caregivers are not permitted to enter the building for the time-being, We are working on an alternating schedule that will allow parents in one class a week to have designated opportunities to come into the classroom. This will help to create a sense of continuity for students and families. Teachers will continue to work together to welcome children and ensure for an easy separation.

Masking is currently optional for students and staff. While handwashing has always been a priority, there is a renewed commitment to it before and after all activities and hand sanitizer and outdoor portable washing stations are readily available.

Weather-permitting, BFS students are spending as much time outdoors as possible, exploring the neighborhood, going to both JJ Byrne and Prospect Park, and enjoying snack and lunch alfresco at the new child-sized picnic tables outside our school entrance. While indoors, classrooms take turns in the “big room,” a sprawling space with vaulted ceilings beloved by students where they are able to spread out and enjoy both creative and physical activities. All indoor spaces at BFS have been outfitted with enhanced ventilation and HEPA air filters.
