Learning at BFS
Learning at BFS
Brooklyn Free Space is a preschool for children who are between the ages of 2 years, 4 months old to 4 years, 8 months old at the beginning of each school year (as of September). For our 62 children, we offer a full day program, with students attending from 9 am–3 pm.
BFS believes in celebrating the innate desire of young child to learn, interact and experience through rich, joyful play. We view children as active collaborators in learning, fully able and interested in developing their own theories and exploring them through play and hands-on exploration. We seek to meet the needs of each child, developing individual interests and encouraging each child’s creativity.
Our Classrooms
Each child grows and develops at their own pace. Because our intention is to reach each child where they’re at, we do not move children to a different classroom based on developmental milestones. Our low teacher child ratio allows for more individualized attention, particularly in regards to the social and emotional development of each child. Every classroom has a three teacher team, who bring decades of expertise and a shared dedication to creating a warm cohesive classroom environment. Children are divided into four classrooms, each serving a specific age range (classroom age ranges may shift):
Jitterbug: 2 years, 4 months - 2 years 10 months. 12 children
Dragonfly: 2 years, 11 months - 3 years, 4 months. 15 children
Sunshine: 3 years, 5 months- 3 years, 11 months. 17 children
Rainbow: 4 years to 4 years, 8 months. 18 children
Teachers regularly communicate with families about what is happening in the classrooms, with weekly narrative reports and photos on their classroom blog. Families feel informed about what their child is doing in the classroom, and when it comes to their daily activities, they understand not just the “what,” but the “how” and “why.”
